Rising Sun is a novel (ISBN 0394589424) written in 1992 by Michael Crichton about a murder in the Los Angeles headquarters of Nakamoto, a fictional Japanese corporation. The book was published by Ballantine Books.
As the grand opening party takes place in the very same building, Cheryl Lynn Austin, 23, is murdered on the 46th floor of the Nakamoto Tower in Los Angeles. Lieutenant Peter Smith, the Special Services Liaison for the LAPD, is assigned to this case. He is joined by retired Captain John Connor who has lived in Japan for a while and is thoroughly accustomed to Japanese culture. Throughout the book Connor uses his knowledge of Japanese customs to help Smith solve the mystery.
