Ripley is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,636.

The Town of Ripley, incorporated in 1817, is in the northeast corner of the county, and is on the shore of Lake Erie There are no incorporated villages in the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 127.0 km² (49.0 mi²). 126.7 km² (48.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

The New York State Thruway passes through the town.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,636 people, 1,004 households, and 722 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.8/km² (53.9/mi²). There are 1,211 housing units at an average density of 9.6 persons/km² (24.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.25% White, 0.19% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,004 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 28.0% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,237, and the median income for a family is $37,083. Males have a median income of $28,278 versus $23,359 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,652. 10.3% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.1% are under the age of 18 and 9.9% are 65 or older.

  • Ripley -- The hamlet of Ripley, located on Route 20 in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Raters Corners -- A location in the southeast part of the town on Route 22.
  • Sheldon Corners -- A location in the southeast part of the town on Route 22.
  • Shore Haven -- a hamlet on the shore of Lake Erie and the eastern town line.
  • South Ripley -- A location in the western part of the town on Route 6.
  • State Line -- a hamlet at the Pennsylvania-New York boundary on Route 20, primarily in the State of Pennsylvania.
  • Wattlesburg -- A community in the center of the town.
