Rhinebeck is a town located in Dutchess County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,762.

History

The Town of Rhinebeck was established in 1788.

Geography

The west town line, marked by the Hudson River is the border of Ulster County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 103.2 km² (39.8 mi²). 93.9 km² (36.3 mi²) of it is land and 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.96% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,762 people, 3,001 households, and 1,797 families residing in the town. The population density is 82.7/km² (214.1/mi²). There are 3,255 housing units at an average density of 34.7/km² (89.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.50% White, 3.61% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 3.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,001 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $52,679, and the median income for a family is $67,837. Males have a median income of $49,028 versus $31,995 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,069. 9.7% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
