Prattsburgh, New York

Prattsburgh (or Prattsburg) is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,064. The name of the town is taken from its most promininent settlement.

The Town of Prattsburgh is in the northeast part of the county.

History

The town was formed from the Town of Pulteney in 1813. The community of Prattsburgh in the town is named after early settler Joel Pratt, who arrived around 1799.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Ontario County and Yates County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 134.0 km² (51.7 mi²). 134.0 km² (51.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,064 people, 809 households, and 567 families residing in the town. The population density is 15.4/km² (39.9/mi²). There are 1,167 housing units at an average density of 8.7/km² (22.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.17% White, 1.55% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 809 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,150, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $28,421 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,008. 17.5% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Prattsburgh

  • Dable Corners -- A location north of Prattsburgh village.
  • Ingelside -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town on Route 53.
  • Prattsburgh -- The hamlet of Prattsburgh is in the southwest part of the town on Route 53. Prattsburgh was incorporated as a village in 1848, but subsequently abandoned its village status. The current was approximately 950 in 1990.
