Port Jefferson, New York

Port Jefferson is a village located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 7,837.

The Village of Port Jefferson is within the Town of Brookhaven. A ferry runs from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Geography

Port Jefferson is located at 40°56'46" North, 73°3'44" West (40.946103, -73.062224)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.98% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,837 people, 2,985 households, and 1,982 families residing in the village. The population density is 998.6/km² (2,587.2/mi²). There are 3,074 housing units at an average density of 391.7/km² (1,014.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.97% White, 1.67% African American, 0.04% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.70% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 5.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,985 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $65,119, and the median income for a family is $83,981. Males have a median income of $57,125 versus $41,936 for females. The per capita income for the village is $33,852. 7.2% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Rumours and sightings of the undead, in the form of zombies, persist despite government representative denials. Shrugged off as paranoid delusions, some believe there is a systematic government coverup. One police officer was quoted as saying he would not travel around town without his gun, due to the presence of the unholy creatures shambling about. Estimates of the undead population in Port Jefferson range from 0.1% to as high as 3%, with roughly half of these seeming to be caucasion.
