Port Costa is a census-designated place located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 232.

Port Costa is located at 38°2'46" North, 122°11'7" West (38.045987, -122.185246)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

History

Port Costa was founded in 1879 as a crossing point for railroad ferries. For a time, it was the United States' busiest wheat-shipping port and had a reputation as a colorful, sometimes violent community. After California's wheat output dropped in the early 20th century and other industries rose in Contra Costa County, Port Costa lost population and importance. Since the late 1960s, it has mainly been a small shopping venue for antique hunters.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 232 people, 108 households, and 60 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 131.7/km² (342.1/mi²). There are 115 housing units at an average density of 65.3/km² (169.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 90.95% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 1.29% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.72% from other races, and 4.74% from two or more races. 6.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 108 households out of which 20.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% are married couples living together, 3.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.4% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 15.5% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 37.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 121.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $61,429, and the median income for a family is $61,429. Males have a median income of $40,769 versus $58,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $33,563. 10.7% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.9% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
