Poipu, Hawaii

Poipu is a census-designated place located in Kauai County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,075.

The town features a group of high-end hotels and resorts (including a Hyatt Regency), and one main shopping center.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.87% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,075 people, 472 households, and 311 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 169.4/km² (437.9/mi²). There are 1,969 housing units at an average density of 310.3/km² (802.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 69.40% White, 0.09% African American, 0.37% Native American, 16.93% Asian, 1.95% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 10.51% from two or more races. 4.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 472 households out of which 18.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.65.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 16.3% under the age of 18, 3.3% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 37.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $51,442, and the median income for a family is $62,396. Males have a median income of $40,694 versus $30,625 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $35,800. 7.5% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
