Plattsburgh is a town located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,190.

The Town of Plattsburgh contains a city also called Plattsburgh. The town is in the eastern part of the county.

Geography

The town borders Lake Champlain, which separates it from Vermont.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 175.6 km² (67.8 mi²). 118.3 km² (45.7 mi²) of it is land and 57.3 km² (22.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.63% water.

History

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,190 people, 4,367 households, and 3,091 families residing in the town. The population density is 94.6/km² (244.9/mi²). There are 4,875 housing units at an average density of 41.2/km² (106.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.68% White, 1.07% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,367 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 21.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,713, and the median income for a family is $50,277. Males have a median income of $36,542 versus $25,565 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,385. 11.9% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 14.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
