Plankton (real name Sheldon J Plankton) is a fictional character in the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. He is a technologically savvy, deep-voiced zooplankter with one central eye—a real-life characteristic of some copepods. He is the smallest of the main characters in the series, able to fit in SpongeBob SquarePants's hand, as well as under Mr. Krabs's foot, as he is only slightly larger than a jelly bean. He is voiced by Doug Lawrence.

Plankton is Mr. Krabs's business rival. He runs a competing restaurant called The Chum Bucket, where no one eats, located directly across the street from The Krusty Krab. Plankton has a number of plans to put Eugene Krabs out of business, all of which involve getting a hold of the secret recipe for the "Krabby Patty" served at The Krusty Krab. He frequently plays on the trusting nature of Spongebob to try and get at it. Plankton is about the same age as Mr. Krabs. Plankton lives at The Chum Bucket with Karen, his computer "wife".

As disclosed in the episode "Plankton's Army", Plankton's first name is Sheldon, which amuses Karen to no end. In the same episode, it is revealed that Plankton has been trying to find out Krabs's secret recipe for twenty-five years.

Plankton's various plans to steal the formula have ranged from infiltrating the Krusty Krab in a robot look-alike of Mr. Krabs to disguising himself as Patrick Star in order to get SpongeBob to reveal the formula to him. Occasionally, Plankton's goals do not relate to the Krabby Patty formula, such as trying to build an even bigger Chum Bucket on Goo Lagoon, and winning the Fry Cook Games. SpongeBob, believing that Plankton was misunderstood, once tried to be his friend, which Plankton (unsuccessfully) took advantage of. Plankton sometimes remarks that "he went to college". This is shown in a two-page comic strip titled "Plankton: The College Years" (printed in "Nickelodeon Magazine Presents the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie"), where it is revealed that he was constantly squished (accidentally) by Mr. Krabs, who by chance was his dormmate.

Eventually, in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Plankton executes Evil Plan Z, wherein he steals the crown of King Neptune, delivers it to Shell City (an aquatic-themed gift shop), and frames it on Mr. Krabs, whom Neptune freezes. While Krabs is frozen, Plankton successfully steals the formula and begins producing Krabby Patties, giving free bucket helmets away with each one. The helmets are, in fact, mind-control devices which Plankton uses to make the citizens bend to his will and change Bikini Bottom to suit his image. Unfortunately for Plankton, SpongeBob and Patrick manage to retrieve the crown and bring it back to Neptune. The film ends with Plankton being arrested, but his antics continue in the series' new episodes, which appear to take place before the movie (otherwise, Plankton would still know the formula).
