Plainville is a city located in Rooks County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,029.

Plainville is located at 39°13'56" North, 99°18'11" West (39.232102, -99.303166)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,029 people, 865 households, and 565 families residing in the city. The population density is 647.4/km² (1,683.4/mi²). There are 948 housing units at an average density of 302.5/km² (786.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.42% White, 0.39% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 865 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 31.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,402, and the median income for a family is $35,673. Males have a median income of $29,408 versus $17,245 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,134. 8.6% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History and current status

The area was first settled in 1877 by B. L. Sinclair. Plainville, previously known as Paradise Flats, was established in 1888, in Rooks County, Kansas. With the advent of the railway in the 1880's, Plainville became a bustling community on the prairie. Today agriculture, oil production, and Schult Homes Manufacturing are at the heart of the economy. Plainville supports a hospital, high school, grade school, parochial school, four banks, seven churches, grocery store, and many small businesses.
