Pittsford (town), New York

Pittsford is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 27,219.

The Town of Pittsford was incorporated in 1827. It was named by Colonel Caleb Hopkins, Pittsford's first town supervisor, for the town of his birth, Pittsford, Vermont.

The Erie Canal passes through the town.

Pittsford is home to Saint John Fisher College & Nazareth College

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 60.6 km² (23.4 mi²). 60.1 km² (23.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.81% water.

The Town of Pittsford is located in the southeastern portion of Monroe County approximately eight miles from the city of Rochester, New York. The Town of Mendon lies to the south, the Town of Perinton to the east, the Towns of Henrietta and Brighton to the west, and the Towns of Brighton and Penfield to the north.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,219 people, 9,448 households, and 7,341 families residing in the town. The population density is 453.2/km² (1,173.7/mi²). There are 9,709 housing units at an average density of 161.7/km² (418.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.61% White, 1.60% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 4.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,448 households out of which 37.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.4% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 19.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $88,232, and the median income for a family is $102,215. Males have a median income of $70,780 versus $39,336 for females. The per capita income for the town is $42,723. 2.9% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. Pittsford is a suburb of Rochester, situated along the Erie Canal in New York.

Education

The vision statement for Pittsford Central Schools is

The district web site boasts that it is one of the top notch school districts in the country. It has received the New York State Governor's Excelsior Award for quality. It costs $11,900 per year to educate a Pittsford student.

In 2003, the Pittsford Mendon High School received a ranking of the 25th best high school in the nation. The other high school in Pittsford is Sutherland High School.

Industry and commerce

The daily activities in Pittsford are somewhat limited, but two large malls, Eastview Mall in Victor, and The Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, are popular for Pittsford residents of all ages. There is also the large shopping center Pittsford Plaza, located on Monroe Ave. on the west side of the town. Fine restaurants include The Waterhouse on Main Street. Pittsford is also the home of one of the largest Wegmans stores in the state. It seems this Wegmans is the major test center for the company, as they use it to test out various ideas, such as mini-restaurants and small pet stores attached to the main building.
