Pierce City is a city located in Lawrence County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,385.

Pierce City is located at 36°56'49" North, 94°0'9" West (36.946996, -94.002430)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,385 people, 574 households, and 378 families residing in the city. The population density is 438.3/km² (1,133.3/mi²). There are 646 housing units at an average density of 204.4/km² (528.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.46% White, 0.22% African American, 1.08% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 574 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,186, and the median income for a family is $34,219. Males have a median income of $23,429 versus $17,857 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,310. 20.6% of the population and 18.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.8% of those under the age of 18 and 29.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

News and History

The most notable tornado of the May 2003 tornado outbreak was the one that hit in Pierce City. According to reports, nearly all of the buildings in the town were damaged, destroyed, or liable to collapse. A National Guard armory where some people took shelter was flattened. Two people were killed and six were missing. The Pierce City tornado was a F-3 on the Fujita scale.
