History

Founded in 1683, Perth Amboy served as the capital of the province of East Jersey from 1683 to 1702 and of New Jersey from 1702 until 1790. The first African-American to vote in an election under the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Thomas Mundy Peterson, voted here in 1870. The city was briefly considered as the site of the US Naval Academy.

Once well known for its terracotta tile industry and as a shipping port, the economy of Perth Amboy has depressed since the closing of the port. Currently, Perth Amboy is one of New Jersey's Urban Enterprise Zones, in which businesses are given extra incentives to do business within the city and sales tax is 3% (rather than the regular sales tax of 6%).

Several blocks of streets in Perth Amboy closest to the water are filled with beautiful Victorian-style homes, and the waterfront park features a boardwalk and a small bandshell. A replica of the Liberty Bell given to the state of New Jersey is on display in the Market Square, still a common gathering place on special occasions although market days are no longer held there.
