Persia, New York

Persia is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,512.

The Town of Persia was incorporated in 1835, formed from the Town of Perrysburg. It is in the northwest part of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.4 km² (21.0 mi²). 54.2 km² (20.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

The northern border of the town is formed by the Cattaraugus Creek with Erie County, New York on the opposite bank.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,512 people, 961 households, and 602 families residing in the town. The population density is 46.3/km² (120.0/mi²). There are 1,071 housing units at an average density of 19.8/km² (51.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.74% White, 0.28% African American, 2.51% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 961 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 31.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,675, and the median income for a family is $39,650. Males have a median income of $29,838 versus $26,304 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,590. 13.1% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Gowanda -- Part of the Village of Gowanda is located in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Persia -- The hamlet of Persia is located south of Gowands near the west town line.
  • Snyders Corners -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 4 and 353.
