Perry County, Arkansas

Perry County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 10,209. The county seat is Perryville. The county was formed on December 18, 1840 and named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, naval hero in the War of 1812.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,452 km² (560 mi²). 1,427 km² (551 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.70% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,209 people, 3,989 households, and 2,939 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (18/mi²). There are 4,702 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.62% White, 1.73% Black or African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 1.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,989 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.10% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,083, and the median income for a family is $37,170. Males have a median income of $28,254 versus $21,462 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,216. 14.00% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.00% of those under the age of 18 and 15.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
