Paw Paw Lake is an unincorporated community located in Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,944. The community and CDP are located within areas of both Coloma Charter Township and Watervliet Township in the area surrounding Paw Paw Lake and Little Paw Paw Lake, excluding the cities of Watervliet and Coloma.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.5 km² (6.8 mi²). 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.45% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,944 people, 1,655 households, and 1,128 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 290.6/km² (752.4/mi²). There are 2,363 housing units at an average density of 174.1/km² (450.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.63% White, 0.58% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,655 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 27.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $38,216, and the median income for a family is $42,377. Males have a median income of $35,112 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $21,003. 6.6% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
