Paul Westerberg

Paul Westerberg is the former lead singer and songwriter of The Replacements, one of the seminal indie rock bands of the 1980s.

The Replacements were one of the driving forces behind indie-rock in the 1980s. Their drunken disregard for societal norms, and their heart-breaking chords and lyrics made everyone think they would be the biggest thing in 1987, or 1986.

Unfortunately, The Mats never translated critical success into commercial sales, in spite of their faithful followers (see Ryan Adams, Uncle Tupelo, Goo Goo Dolls, and most of alt-country) who seemed to cash in on the same formula.

'Mats fans never forgot the original. After a major label period, Westerberg came to his senses, and let everyone hear what was going on his basement studio. The results, mostly lo-fi affairs, have been mixed.

Westerberg's sister, Mary Lucia, works for the Minneapolis-St. Paul radio station KCMP.
