Patrick Joseph Lucey

Patrick Joseph Lucey (born March 21, 1918) was a member of the Democratic Party who served as governor of the U.S. state of Wisconsin from 1971 to 1977. He was also an independent vice-presidential candidate in 1980 with John Anderson.
Lucey was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, attended St. Thomas College, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, after serving in the Army during World War II. Prior to his election as Governor, he served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1949 to 1951 and as Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin from 1965 to 1967. In 1966, he first ran for Governor, but was defeated. He served as governor until 1977, when President Jimmy Carter appointed him ambassador to Mexico, a post he held until 1979. In 1980, Lucey ran for Vice President on the independent ticket of John Anderson.
