Palmyra is a village located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,490.

The Village of Palmyra is in the Town of Palmyra. The village is located on Route 31 east of Rochester.

The area around Palmyra is the birthplace of Mormonism.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

It is located along the Erie Canal, near the south shore of Lake Ontario at a Latitude of 43.063 North and Longitude -77.233 West. It is part of metropolitan Rochester, New York.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,490 people, 1,494 households, and 871 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,013.2/km² (2,623.4/mi²). There are 1,588 housing units at an average density of 461.0/km² (1,193.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.25% White, 0.49% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,494 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the village the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $38,561, and the median income for a family is $49,450. Males have a median income of $35,351 versus $22,870 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,087. 6.8% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.9% of those under the age of 18 and 8.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
