Palermo, New York

Palermo is a town located in Oswego County in the US state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,686.

The Town of Palermo is centrally located in the county, east of Fulton, New York.

History

The Town of Palermo was created in 1832 from the Town of Volney. The first permanent settler had arrived around 1803.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 105.5 km² (40.8 mi²). 105.2 km² (40.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,686 people, 1,306 households, and 1,000 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.1/km² (90.8/mi²). There are 1,366 housing units at an average density of 13.0/km² (33.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.86% White, 0.38% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,306 households out of which 38.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% are non-families. 16.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $43,170, and the median income for a family is $46,190. Males have a median income of $30,104 versus $25,150 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,229. 6.9% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
