Club history

In 1982, the Ontario Hockey League awarded an expansion franchise to the City of Guelph, and the Holody family took ownership. The Holodys were a wealthy family who made their money through ownership of an electroplating factory, so they named their new team the "Platers".

The Guelph Platers' first season was dismal. The team lost 63 of their 70 games setting the current OHL record for most losses in a season. Other embarrassing and still-standing records set that season were Most Goals Against (555), Most Home Losses (30), and Most Road Losses (33). Guelph finished poorly in all it's subsequent seasons save for the 1985-86 season.

In 1986, the Guelph Platers caught the entire Canadian Hockey League off-guard. Led by coach Jacques Martin, the team reached the playoffs for the first time in their three-year history finishing second in the Emms (Western) Conference. The Platers then won the J. Ross Robertson Cup, defeating Belleville 8 points to 4 in the final. In the Memorial Cup championship, Guelph finished first in the round-robin and took a bye to the final where they met the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL. The surprise season ended with two pairs of surprise goals 11 and 13 seconds apart respectively. The Platers won the game 5-2 to capture the Memorial Cup.

Unfortunately, the success was short-lived and the Platers continued to struggle. In 1989, the Holodys moved the team to Owen Sound, Ontario, retaining the name "Platers". The Owen Sound Platers continued their old team's lacklustre record throughout the 90s, but disproportionately high support from the smallest city in the OHL allowed Owen Sound to hold on to the team.

The Holodys decided to sell the team in 2000 and buyers were sought from any city. Several local Owen Sound businesspeople realized that losing the team would be a crisis for the city, so they bonded together to purchase the team. The team remained in Owen Sound under the stipulations that it be renamed to the "Owen Sound Attack" and that significant renovations be made to the team's home arena, the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

The newly renovated arena will host the 2004-2005 OHL All-Stars festivities.
