Ovid (town), New York

Ovid is a town located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,757. The town is named after the Roman poet Ovid.

The Town of Ovid contains a village also called Ovid. The town is in the south part of the county, extending between two Finger Lakes.

History

The town was formed in 1794, while still part of Onondaga County. Andrew Dunlap, the first settler in the town, is believed to be also the first settler in the county. The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution.

Geography

The west town line, delineated by Seneca Lake is the border of Yates County, New York, and the east town line, delineated by Cayuga Lake is the border of Cayuga County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 100.5 km² (38.8 mi²). 80.3 km² (31.0 mi²) of it is land and 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,757 people, 918 households, and 585 families residing in the town. The population density is 34.3/km² (89.0/mi²). There are 1,118 housing units at an average density of 13.9/km² (36.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.42% White, 9.50% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.97% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 5.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 918 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 127.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 136.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,833, and the median income for a family is $42,344. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $25,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,329. 9.9% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
