Oppenheim is a town located in Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,774.

The Town of Oppenheim is at the western border of the county.

History

The town was first settled around 1791. Oppenheim was established from the Town of Palatine in Montgomery County, New York before the formation of Fulton County.

Geography

The northern part of the town is in the Adirondack State Park. The west town line is the border of Herkimer County and the south town line is the border of Montgomery County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 146.2 km² (56.5 mi²). 145.7 km² (56.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,774 people, 685 households, and 493 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.2/km² (31.5/mi²). There are 858 housing units at an average density of 5.9/km² (15.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.31% White, 0.73% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 685 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 106.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,284, and the median income for a family is $34,306. Males have a median income of $26,289 versus $19,427 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,504. 12.4% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Oppenheim -- The hamlet of Oppenheim on Route 29 near Crum Creek.
  • Phipps Corners -- A location east of Lotville.
  • Rasbach Corners -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town.
