Operation: Mindcrime is Queensr˙che's third full-length album, which was released on May 3, 1988. It is a concept album about a man becoming disillusioned with American society, and joining in a conspiratorial plot to assassinate its corrupt leaders, with spoken dialogue between songs that advances the story and ties the songs together.

The album told a complex story involving Dr. X, politics, and drugs. A box set called Operation: Livecrime also featured a full-length video with animated clips telling the story. The story was initially explored in a series of video clips for MTV in the 1988 VHS video, Video: Mindcrime.

The entire album is actually a flashback of a convicted felon who only goes by the name of Nikki. Nikki is sitting in bed in a mental hospital as the nurse administers his shot. He starts dreaming about the series of unfortunate events that landed him in jail. Ironically enough the album closes with same three words spoken in its opening seconds, "I remember now."
