Opa-locka, Florida

Opa-locka is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,951. It is home to Opa-locka Airport.

This city has a very large flea market, called the Opa-locka/Hialeah Flea Market, with over 1,000 vendors.

Opa-locka is located at 25°54'4" North, 80°15'3" West (25.901218, -80.250824)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.13% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,951 people, 4,890 households, and 3,437 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,333.2/km² (3,451.9/mi²). There are 5,407 housing units at an average density of 482.1/km² (1,248.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 22.83% White, 69.64% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.60% from other races, and 3.35% from two or more races. 28.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,890 households out of which 41.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.4% are married couples living together, 35.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.97 and the average family size is 3.52.

In the city the population is spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,631, and the median income for a family is $22,742. Males have a median income of $22,347 versus $19,270 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,538. 35.2% of the population and 31.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.3% of those under the age of 18 and 40.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
