Northwest Harwich, Massachusetts

Northwest Harwich is a census-designated place located in the town of Harwich in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the district had a total population of 4,001.

Geography

Northwest Harwich is located at 41°41'14" North, 70°6'17" West (41.687352, -70.104802)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the district has a total area of 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²). 21.0 km² (8.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.50% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,001 people, 1,608 households, and 1,093 families residing in the district. The population density is 190.2/km² (492.9/mi²). There are 3,126 housing units at an average density of 148.6/km² (385.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the district is 94.13% White, 1.15% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 2.87% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,608 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 26.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the district the population is spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 29.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 81.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.2 males.

The median income for a household in the district is $41,250, and the median income for a family is $53,533. Males have a median income of $41,170 versus $29,321 for females. The per capita income for the district is $22,602. 3.9% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
