North Miami Beach is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 40,786.

Geography

North Miami Beach is located at 25°55'49" North, 80°10'11" West (25.930171, -80.169780)Template:GR. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²). 12.8 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.43% water.

Despite its name, this city on the Intracoastal Waterway has no beaches within its city limits, although they are a short distance away, across the inlet.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 40,786 people, 13,987 households, and 9,804 families residing in the city. The population density is 3,174.9/km² (8,230.6/mi²). There are 15,350 housing units at an average density of 1,194.9/km² (3,097.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 46.68% White, 38.97% African American, 0.29% Native American, 4.04% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 4.61% from other races, and 5.34% from two or more races. 30.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,987 households out of which 37.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 19.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,377, and the median income for a family is $35,047. Males have a median income of $26,278 versus $22,110 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,699. 20.5% of the population and 18.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.1% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Attractions

Attractions in vicinity of North Miami Beach include a line of popular ocean beaches. Haulover Park, operated by Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation, has a well known clothing optional beach.

North Miami Beach also has an authentic Medieval Spanish monastery. This stone building around a patio, the cloisters of the Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux, was built in Sacramenia, Segovia, Spain in the 12th century. It was purchased by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s, dismantled and shipped to the United States, and reassembled after Hearst's death in North Miami Beach in the 1950s. It is a tourism attraction and a popular spot for weddings.
