North Liberty, Iowa

The City of North Liberty is located in Johnson County, Iowa and was incorporated November 10, 1913 at a time when the population was approximately 190. It is a suburb of Iowa City.

The population dipped to 150 in 1930 but doubled to 300 by 1940 and by 1960 the population was 334 and by 1967 it numbered 782.

In 1981 the city had grown to 2,046 and at the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,367; a special census taken by the city in 2004 counted 7,224 residents.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,367 people, 2,259 households, and 1,400 families residing in the city. The population density is 305.6/km² (791.9/mi²). There are 2,377 housing units at an average density of 135.4/km² (350.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.38% White, 1.53% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,259 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 43.9% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 4.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,500, and the median income for a family is $53,750. Males have a median income of $35,042 versus $29,328 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,339. 5.5% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Infrastructure

The sewage from the city is treated at a modern and sophisticated treatment plant using Sequential Batch Reactors (SBRs) followed by UV strilization. It is designed to be able to discharge more than 2 million gallons of high quality effluent to Muddy Creek each day.
