Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 44,187 people, 15,389 households, and 10,741 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,332.9/km² (3,452.0/mi²). There are 16,149 housing units at an average density of 487.1/km² (1,261.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 67.91% White, 11.13% African American, 1.39% Native American, 5.69% Asian, 0.54% Pacific Islander, 6.13% from other races, and 7.20% from two or more races. 15.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,389 households out of which 37.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% are married couples living together, 20.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.31.
