North Harmony, New York

North Harmony is a town located in Chautauqua County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,521.

The Town of North Harmony was incorporated in 1919. The town is on the west side of Chautauqua Lake.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.3 km² (42.2 mi²). 109.3 km² (42.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes through the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,521 people, 927 households, and 724 families residing in the town. The population density is 23.1/km² (59.8/mi²). There are 1,412 housing units at an average density of 12.9/km² (33.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.85% White, 0.12% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 927 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% are non-families. 18.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,181, and the median income for a family is $47,614. Males have a median income of $34,375 versus $22,554 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,795. 9.7% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 9.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Adjacent towns and areas

The eastern border of North Harmony is Lake Chautauqua. On the northern border is the Town of Chautauqua. The western border is the Town of Sherman. The thw south are the Towns of Clymer and Harmony. North Harmony shares a short border on its southeast corner with the Town of Busti.
