North Caldwell, New Jersey

North Caldwell is a borough located in Essex County, New Jersey. The mayor is Mel Levine. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 7,375.

Geography

North Caldwell is located at 40°51'49" North, 74°15'31" West (40.863532, -74.258700)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,375 people, 2,070 households, and 1,834 families residing in the borough. The population density is 952.3/km² (2,464.6/mi²). There are 2,108 housing units at an average density of 272.2/km² (704.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 79.63% White, 14.51% African American, 0.03% Native American, 4.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,070 households out of which 42.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 80.5% are married couples living together, 5.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 11.4% are non-families. 9.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.23.

In the borough the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 118.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 124.2 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $117,395, and the median income for a family is $125,465. Males have a median income of $87,902 versus $47,904 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $48,249. 1.2% of the population and 0.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

North Caldwell contains 4 schools. For grades K-3 is Grandview School. For grades 4-6 is Gould School. Grades 7-12 are served by the West Essex Regional School district which also serves Fairfield, Essex Fells. and Roseland.

Historical Events

In 1994, the Unabamber, Theodore Kaczynski sent a mail bomb to an advertising executive who resided in North Caldwell. This incident put the small town on the national map for a brief moment in time.


North Caldwell in popular culture

In the HBO television show, The Sopranos, Tony Soprano and his family live in North Caldwell. Many scenes from the program are filmed in North Caldwell and in other communities across New Jersey.
