Noorvik is a city located in Northwest Arctic Borough, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 634.

Noorvik is located at 66°50'14" North, 161°2'12" West (66.837130, -161.036641)Template:GR.

Noorvik is located on the right bank of the Nazuruk Channel of the Kobuk River, 53 km (33 miles) northwest of Selawik and 76 km (47 miles) east of Kotzebue.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.3 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 28.36% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 634 people, 136 households, and 113 families residing in the city. The population density is 255.0/km² (658.7/mi²). There are 157 housing units at an average density of 63.1/km² (163.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 4.89% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 90.06% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 4.89% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 136 households out of which 58.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% are married couples living together, 18.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.9% are non-families. 14.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.66 and the average family size is 5.19.

In the city the population is spread out with 44.5% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 11.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 135.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 134.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $51,964, and the median income for a family is $52,708. Males have a median income of $34,750 versus $24,583 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,020. 7.6% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Noorvik means "a place that is moved to." in Inupiaq, the language of the Inupiat. The village was established by Kowagmuit Inupiat fishermen and hunters from Deering in the early 1900s. Other settlers came from Oksik, a few miles upriver.
