Newberry, Michigan

Newberry is a village located in Luce County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,686. It is the county seat of Luce County6.

Newberry is surrounded by miles of state and national forests and is considered one of two gateways to the Tahquamenon Falls area. (The other is Paradise, approximately 40 miles to the northeast.) Newberry was designated as the moose capital of Michigan by the state legislature, in House Resolution 2002-572 and Senate Resolution 2002-259. It is home to a state prison.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,686 people, 717 households, and 456 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,058.2/km² (2,737.1/mi²). There are 824 housing units at an average density of 324.6/km² (839.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 69.92% White, 19.29% African American, 4.95% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 4.13% from two or more races. 3.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 717 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the village the population is spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 39.4% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 181.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 215.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $29,052, and the median income for a family is $36,607. Males have a median income of $29,286 versus $20,956 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,224. 18.1% of the population and 15.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
