History of New River

New River is named after the seasonal wash of the same name, part of the Agua Fria river system which drains into the Salt River. It's founding date is unknown, and it retained a largely rural character until its neighbor to the south, Phoenix, experienced a growing spree of phenomenal proportions; between (add urban expansion data to phoenix page, talk about urban encroachment and annexation here...) In 1998, the Del Webb Corporation proposed a residential development roughly as large as Flagstaff, Arizona's fifth-largest city; this instigated a short-lived self-incorporation campaign which failed due to lack of popular support. Phoenix later annexed the region, and Del Webb went ahead as planned; the development, now called Anthem, is currently half complete.

Some residents of the area do not consider Anthem to be a part of New River, but since the town is itself unincorporated, the name has entered use as a blanket term for the region northeast of urban Phoenix.
