New City, New York

New City is a hamlet (and also a census-designated place) located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 34,038. New City is the county seat of Rockland CountyTemplate:GR.

Geography

New City is located at 41°8'44" North, 73°59'42" West (41.145495, -73.994901)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 42.2 km² (16.3 mi²). 40.4 km² (15.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.29% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 34,038 people, 11,030 households, and 9,496 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 842.4/km² (2,181.6/mi²). There are 11,161 housing units at an average density of 276.2/km² (715.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 85.09% White, 4.67% African American, 0.08% Native American, 6.99% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 5.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,030 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.1% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.9% are non-families. 11.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $92,261, and the median income for a family is $99,761. Males have a median income of $62,234 versus $43,028 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $37,519. 2.8% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
