New Carlisle is located at 39°56'25" North, 84°1'47" West (39.940314, -84.029634)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²). 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.52% is water.

Demographics

It should be noted that the nearby unincorporated town of Park Layne is considered by the post office, local government, and many residents of the area to be under the jurisdiction of, and therefore a part of, New Carlisle. However, since the Census Bureau considers Park Layne to be separate, the following demographic information reflects only the City of New Carlisle proper.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,735 people, 2,207 households, and 1,551 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,147.3/km² (2,968.2/mi²). There are 2,286 housing units at an average density of 457.3/km² (1,183.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.18% White, 0.33% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 2.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,207 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families. 26.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $39,081, and the median income for a family is $43,320. Males have a median income of $33,413 versus $21,449 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,490. 11.5% of the population and 9.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

New Carlisle was the birthplace of General Frederick Funston.

On June 10, 1933, the infamous John Dillinger committed his first bank robbery, taking $10,000 from a bank that occupied the building at southeast corner of Main Street and Jefferson Street (state routes 235 and 571) in New Carlisle.
