Navarro County, Texas

Navarro County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 45,124. Its county seat is Corsicana6. Navarro County is named for José Antonio Navarro, a Tejano leader in the Texas Revolution who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,813 km² (1,086 mi²). 2,610 km² (1,008 mi²) of it is land and 203 km² (79 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.23% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 45,124 people, 16,491 households, and 11,906 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (45/mi²). There are 18,449 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.84% White, 16.79% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.33% Pacific Islander, 9.45% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 15.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,491 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,268, and the median income for a family is $38,130. Males have a median income of $30,112 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,266. 18.20% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.10% of those under the age of 18 and 14.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
