Nassawadox, Virginia

Nassawadox is a town located in Northampton County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 572.

Perhaps the most famous person to live in Nassawadox was Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, a popular bluesman in the 1940s and '50s. Three songs that he wrote were performed by Elvis Presley early in his career ("That's Alright, Mama"; "So Glad You're Mine"; and "My Baby Left Me.") Crudup worked in Nassawadox in the '50s and '60s after leaving the music business. He went back to playing music in 1961, and successfully toured England and Australia. Crudup died in Nassawadox in 1974.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 572 people, 186 households, and 121 families residing in the town. The population density is 513.6/km² (1,334.2/mi²). There are 207 housing units at an average density of 185.9/km² (482.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 43.18% White, 54.90% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 186 households out of which 23.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.8% are married couples living together, 22.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 14.7% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 40.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 54 years. For every 100 females there are 81.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $21,250, and the median income for a family is $27,500. Males have a median income of $25,000 versus $23,594 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,626. 32.8% of the population and 24.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 44.7% of those under the age of 18 and 18.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
