Nassau is a town located in Rensselaer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,818.

The Town of Nassau is at the southern border of the county.

History

The town was originally formed as the "Town of Philipstown" in 1806, but changed its name to Nassau in 1808.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Columbia County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 117.1 km² (45.2 mi²). 115.4 km² (44.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.46% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,818 people, 1,851 households, and 1,330 families residing in the town. The population density is 41.8/km² (108.2/mi²). There are 2,058 housing units at an average density of 17.8/km² (46.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.66% White, 1.08% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,851 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,526, and the median income for a family is $53,313. Males have a median income of $38,981 versus $26,804 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,785. 7.7% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
