Narrowsburg, New York

Narrowsburg is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 414.

Narrowsburg is in the western part of the Town of Tusten at the junction of Routes 52 and 97. The community calls itself the "Eagle capital of New York State."

History

The community was first called Homans Eddy after Benjamin Homan, the first settler in the town.

Geography

The community is on the east shore of the Delaware River, adjacent to the border of [[Pennsylvania].

Narrowsburg is located at 41°36'25" North, 75°3'44" West (41.606881, -75.062255)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.61% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 414 people, 189 households, and 117 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 115.8/km² (300.7/mi²). There are 254 housing units at an average density of 71.1/km² (184.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 92.03% White, 5.07% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 3.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 189 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $35,694, and the median income for a family is $44,688. Males have a median income of $33,500 versus $26,563 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $19,577. 4.7% of the population and 5.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
