Morehouse, New York

Morehouse is a town located in Hamilton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 151. The name is that of an early settler, Andrew Morehouse.

The Town of Morehouse is in the Adirondack State Park and was formed in 1835. The town is in the southwestern cornerer of the county.

History

Morehouse was formed from part of the Town of Lake Pleasant. In 1901 The Town of Inlet was removed.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 504.3 km² (194.7 mi²). 495.0 km² (191.1 mi²) of it is land and 9.4 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.86% water.

The western and southern town lines are the border of Herkimer County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 151 people, 65 households, and 46 families residing in the town. The population density is 0.3/km² (0.8/mi²). There are 293 housing units at an average density of 0.6/km² (1.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.35% White, 0.00% African American, 1.32% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.32% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 65 households out of which 18.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% are married couples living together, 3.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 20.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.57.

In the town the population is spread out with 17.9% under the age of 18, 2.0% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 37.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 125.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 129.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $25,417, and the median income for a family is $27,500. Males have a median income of $21,750 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,864. 7.3% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Morehouse Mountain -- A mountain near the east town line, south of Route 8.
  • Mountain Lake -- A location north of Hoffmeister on Mountain Home Road.
  • Hoffmeister -- A hamlet on Route 8 east of Morehouse, named after an early settler.
