Moreau, New York

Moreau is a town located in Saratoga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 13,826. The town is named after Jean Victor Moreau, a French general, who visited the area.

The Town of Moreau is located in the northeast part of the county, south of the City of Glens Falls.

History

The town was established in 1805 from part of the Town of Northumberland.

Geography

Much of the town's boundary is established by the Hudson River. The eastern town line, formed by the river, is the border of Washington County, New York. The north town line is the border of Warren County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 112.9 km² (43.6 mi²). 109.2 km² (42.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,826 people, 5,128 households, and 3,543 families residing in the town. The population density is 126.6/km² (327.9/mi²). There are 5,395 housing units at an average density of 49.4/km² (128.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.07% White, 3.58% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,128 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 107.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,536, and the median income for a family is $47,788. Males have a median income of $35,660 versus $25,321 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,492. 7.1% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
