Montezuma County is a county located in the southwest corner of the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 23,830. The county seat is Cortez.

Mesa Verde National Park and Hovenweep National Monument preserve scores of ancient Indian cliff-dwellings found in the county.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,284 km² (2,040 mi²). 5,275 km² (2,037 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,830 people, 9,201 households, and 6,514 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (12/mi²). There are 10,497 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.72% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 11.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.26% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 9.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,201 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,083, and the median income for a family is $38,071. Males have a median income of $30,666 versus $21,181 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,003. 16.40% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.20% of those under the age of 18 and 14.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
