Monroe, Ohio

Monroe is a city located in east central Butler and west central Warren counties in southwestern Ohio in Lemon and Turtlecreek Townships. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,133, up from 4,008 in 1990.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.2 km² (15.5 mi²). 40.2 km² (15.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,133 people, 2,685 households, and 2,040 families residing in the city. The population density is 177.6/km² (459.9/mi²). There are 2,822 housing units at an average density of 70.3/km² (182.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.15% White, 1.42% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,685 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.1% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 20.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $56,012, and the median income for a family is $62,528. Males have a median income of $44,864 versus $27,385 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,735. 1.9% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.4% of those under the age of 18 and 2.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Schools and utilities

The entire village is in the Monroe Local School District. Telephone service is provided through the Monroe, Middletown, and Mason telephone exchanges. Mail is delivered through the Monroe, Middletown, and Lebanon post offices.
