Miramichi (electoral district)

The federal electoral district of Miramichi is located in northeastern New Brunswick, Canada. In 2001 its population was 63,001. It is named for the river and city of the same name.

The riding currently contains all of Northumberland County, plus the Belledune area, several bedroom communities for Bathurst, and the area around Kouchibouguac National Park. The riding is mostly anglophone with a significant francophone minority.

History

The riding is related from the former riding of Northumberland, which existed since 1867. In 1955 it changed its name to Northumberland-Miramichi, and in 1987 became simply Miramichi. Until 1966 it consisted solely of Northumberland County, but due to declining populations it added part of northern Kent County, near present day Kouchibouguac National Park. Between 1987 and 1996 it also included a small part of York County, and in 2003 it added a large area to the north, including Allardville and Belledune.

Miramichi has tended to vote Liberal in federal elections, with a few exceptions.
