Miller Place is a census-designated place located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 10,580.

Geography

Miller Place is located at 40°56'48" North, 72°59'35" West (40.946624, -72.993087)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 18.7 km² (7.2 mi²). 18.7 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water, except for a small pond opposite the North Country Road Middle School. NCRMS is down the road from Miller Place's famous ice cream palor, McNulty's. The area is hilly in some areas but has good grass and trees in most places because much of Miller Place was farm land, before the population on Long Island grew.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,580 people, 3,397 households, and 2,833 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 566.6/km² (1,468.1/mi²). There are 3,512 housing units at an average density of 188.1/km² (487.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.76% White, 0.43% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 3.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,397 households out of which 46.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.0% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% are non-families. 13.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $80,455, and the median income for a family is $87,656. Males have a median income of $58,887 versus $37,091 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $27,895. 2.4% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Notoriety

Miller Place has garnered some renown for being the home of the Miller Place Panthers High School badminton team, which has earned recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest winning streak in team sports history. "The Streak" began in the spring of 1973 and came to an end on April 12, 2005, when the Panthers were defeated in a match by Smithtown High School, 10-5. The Panthers did not lose a single match over a 32-year span that encompassed 504 consecutive victories.
