Miller County, Arkansas

Miller County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 40,443. The county seat is Texarkana. The county was formed on April 1, 1820 and named for James Miller, the first governor of the Arkansas Territory.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,651 km² (637 mi²). 1,616 km² (624 mi²) of it is land and 35 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.12% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,443 people, 15,637 households, and 11,086 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (65/mi²). There are 17,727 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.02% White, 22.99% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,637 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.90% are married couples living together, 16.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,951, and the median income for a family is $36,665. Males have a median income of $33,080 versus $21,376 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,444. 19.30% of the population and 15.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.90% of those under the age of 18 and 16.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
