Middlefield is a village located in Geauga County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,233.

Geography

Middlefield is located at 41°27'41" North, 81°4'36" West (41.461310, -81.076769)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

History

Named because it was the midway point between Painesville, Ohio and Warren, Ohio, Middlefield was established in 1799. It was incorporated into a village in 1901.

In 2005, Wal-Mart opened a Supercenter in the village. Catering to the local Amish population, the Supercenter has an expanded parking lot that includes 37 hitching posts for horse-drawn carriages. Also, the store is stocked with blocks of ice instead of crushed ice and fabrics for clothes to be made at home.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,233 people, 955 households, and 576 families residing in the village. The population density is 287.4/km² (743.1/mi²). There are 1,015 housing units at an average density of 130.6/km² (337.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.90% White, 0.85% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 955 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $38,581, and the median income for a family is $47,500. Males have a median income of $35,898 versus $26,302 for females. The per capita income for the village is $19,400. 9.0% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.5% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Middlefield is the center of the world's fourth largest Amish settlement.
