Medora, North Dakota

Medora is a city located in Billings County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 100. It is the county seat of Billings CountyTemplate:GR.

The city was founded in 1883 by a French nobleman Marquis de Mores, who named the city after his wife Medora Von Hoffman. de Mores wanted to ship refrigerated meat to Chicago via the railroad. He built a meat packing plant for this purpose and a house Chateau de Mores. The latter is now functioning as a museum.

The South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is along Interstate 94 near Medora.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 100 people, 51 households, and 23 families residing in the city. The population density is 104.4/km² (271.7/mi²). There are 117 housing units at an average density of 122.1/km² (317.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 51 households out of which 21.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.4% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.9% are non-families. 51.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.96 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,563, and the median income for a family is $61,250. Males have a median income of $26,042 versus $21,094 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,399. 4.8% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 15.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
