Medina, Washington

Medina is a city located in King County, Washington, on the eastern shore of Lake Washington opposite Seattle. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,011. The city is mostly residential and home to many of the wealthiest people in the greater Seattle area, including Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

History

Named in 1892 for the holy city of Medina in Saudi Arabia, Medina was platted in 1914 and officially incorporated on August 19, 1955.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²). 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 69.94% water.

Medina is connected to Seattle on the western shore of Lake Washington by Washington State Route 520 on the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, the longest floating bridge in the world.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,011 people, 1,111 households, and 905 families residing in the city. The population density is 813.0/km² (2,102.3/mi²). There are 1,165 housing units at an average density of 314.6/km² (813.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.63% White, 0.17% African American, 0.27% Native American, 4.88% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 1.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,111 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.6% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% are non-families. 14.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $133,756, and the median income for a family is $149,637. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $50,893 for females. The per capita income for the city is $81,742. 0.8% of the population and 0.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
